THE WAR THAT NEVER WAS

MAHABHARATA

This is the story of the Hastinapura land dispute between two sets of cousins. What a tall tale it is too- literally, it is the longest poem in the world. Although some Hindus like to claim that the events mentioned in the Mahabharata took place over 5000 years ago, historians estimate that the dispute took place between 900-800 BC. The earliest written record of this war is timed at about 400 BC and the latest version at around 400AD. So this story was passed down in oral form for at least four hundred years, and then underwent written amendments over the next 800 years or so. There are several versions of this story in existence. The Mahabharata took place at a time when there was no written Sanskrit script as the language had not fully evolved into a written form. You are well familiar with the tale but let me repeat it here to refresh your memory.
